Molecular genetic investigation of the steviol glycoside pathway

Steviol glycosides, extraordinarily sweet compounds produced in the plant species Stevia rebaudiana, are becoming increasingly popular in the food and beverage industries as zero-calorie sugar substitutes. The steviol glycoside pathway is complex, and we are investigating key genes and enzymes of the pathway in an attempt to better understand how these compounds are produced, and how this process can be optimized.
